I haven't done this in a long, long time so I don't remember precisely.

But from what I wrote above, open up the contacts.vcf file which you exported from Google, and replace all instances of "VERSION=3.0" with "VERSION=2.1". Also delete all lines that say "TYPE=".

Then split the file using vCardSplit and import into your phone.
